Backcountry Skiing, a new adventure...

Image
Embrace winter.. that is what everyone says, otherwise it will feel like an eternity.  Ever since I moved to Canada, I have been fascinating by the seasonal changes. Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.. They all have something to offer, whether is camping in summer time or enjoying the lake or skiing in the mountains in the white and beautiful snow. For me there is no bad weather, just poor clothe selection :-) I try to keep all my activities year round, I run every day of the year (even when is minus 40c !!), I bike year round too (not only commuting but mountain biking ! or should I call it fat biking?). I ski and ice skate (mostly with my kids), but this year I am getting into Backcountry skiing! I found a pretty good setup that my friend Pam was willing to sell and didn't hesitate to buy  for my new adventure. It is an opportunity to explore new terrain and keep the fitness through the winter. Been in the mountains is one of the most pleasant experiences I have ever...

MEC 7 Race, Half Marathon Oct 2019 PB

There is always a place for a PB, there is always a place to probe yourself, to push your limits, to fight your thoughts.. Over the past 14 weeks I have been joining some friends that are training for Toronto and New York full marathon races... and in doing so I have been able to learn how to run faster, how to push harder when your legs are tired, but more importantly sharing the same passion for running with a group of friends. A few weeks ago I did a 16k tempo with Curtis. He is normally faster in every workout and I am always behind by a few seconds. This day, Ken wasn't around and I found myself with Curtis alone ! So I knew what this was going to be a challenge for me to keep up at what he normally runs these tempos (3:50 min/pace). For the first 5 k I was able to stay with him (side by side), then I thought what if I can do another 3 k? and there I was, we came to the turn around  point (8k) and I was still there (side by side), coming back we hit the 10k mark at 38:20 (whi...

Mount Victoria Circumnavigation Trail Run.. organized by Ken Young

Image
Early in June Ken Young (one of the most experienced runners in our group) pop the idea of a trail run over some passes and a glacier in the Rockies starting at Lake Louise.. running three national parks in one day (Banff, Yoho and Kootenay). Without hesitation I was in for the adventure.. little I knew it was a major adventure and not just another trail run.. (well sometimes been naive isn’t a bad thing). Ready to roll by 6:30 am at Lake Louise parking lot, Pete, Myron, Jody, Ken and myself were ready for the run. We were probably all carrying at least 10-15 pounds each in our backpacks, including harnesses, rope, axes, food, bear spray etc... The route Grand Depart at Lake Louise River Crossings to Ross Lake The first 9 kms to Ross Lake is an easy trail, a bit wet with two river crossings, but with hardly any climbs, social chat took place along the run with some jokes to keep things fun. From Ros...
