MEC 7 Race, Half Marathon Oct 2019 PB

There is always a place for a PB, there is always a place to probe yourself, to push your limits, to fight your thoughts.. Over the past 14 weeks I have been joining some friends that are training for Toronto and New York full marathon races... and in doing so I have been able to learn how to run faster, how to push harder when your legs are tired, but more importantly sharing the same passion for running with a group of friends.
A few weeks ago I did a 16k tempo with Curtis. He is normally faster in every workout and I am always behind by a few seconds. This day, Ken wasn't around and I found myself with Curtis alone ! So I knew what this was going to be a challenge for me to keep up at what he normally runs these tempos (3:50 min/pace). For the first 5 k I was able to stay with him (side by side), then I thought what if I can do another 3 k? and there I was, we came to the turn around  point (8k) and I was still there (side by side), coming back we hit the 10k mark at 38:20 (which is probably one of my fastest times in the 10K), kept going and was able to do the 16k tempo in 3:50 min/pace ! bang that was fast !!

So since I had a a good training on my legs I decided to use my free entry to race the MEC 7 half marathon. I was counting on a flat course (out and back along the river where I normally run), but instead was in a hilly one !! they ran the race by Nose Creek which has some major hills (specially after the first 12k). I managed to start right at pace, but after the first 10k the legs were feeling heavy and couldn't keep up the target pace up the hills.
The first place guy was always at my sight, but eventually disappeared.

Coming towards the end in the last 2k I was able to pick up the pace again and since I had nothing else to do the rest of the day I was able to crack my PB for the half at 1:24!

My wife and kids were waiting in the finish line and was able to enjoy their company for the rest of the day :-)
