MEC 7 42.2km Marathon, October 22nd 2016 !
There you go, I committed to run my first Marathon before I turn 40 and I did it !! Somehow I got in my head a 3:10:00 as my goal and made it! with a finish time of 3:07:58 I am now an official Boston Marathon Qualifier !!! 10 weeks ago when I decided to sign up for this Marathon I ramped up my training and started to put in more distance and intensity. I hooked up with Ryan Twa and he kindly invited me to run with his team, some weird workouts, but since I am not to picky with that, they all fit my needs ! We also live close to each other, so commuting to and from work was something that worked out ok for both #@#@#$
One of the training days (the longest I ran) was a 27km with an average pace of 4:40min/km. Early morning 7.30AM on a snowy day ! sloshy and cold brrrr
The weekend prior to my race I decided to take it easy, and rested well on Saturday, however did a stupid dirt bike ride of 4 hours on Sunday that beat me up pretty bad.... my upper buddy was super sore and couldn't even move.. stupid mistake, but couldn't miss the chance to play with my bike in the snow, so suck it up baby !!
OK so race day, woke up at 6:30am (race was schedule for 9:00), had a shower and breakfast (oatmeal, waffles, coffee). I was at the race at 8:00 sitting in my warm and cozy car... it was about 3c, so I tried to figure out what to wear. Shorts, and the t-shirts was my choice. I carried two water bottles with Vitargo, had one gel with me and one package of jelly beans. With Tristan and Ryan setting the pace we started as planned at 4:30 m/km. I broke my race into three parts of 14k. The first 14k were are 1:01, perfect, 2 min to spare. The second 14k I was at 2:07 (a bit slower but on time) the third 14 k at 59 !. I drank my two bottles + two more that Ryan and Tristan re-filled at 25k and 32k. I had the jelly beans along the 28 kms and the gel in the last 10k. When we were at the 38k mark we passed the 5th place guy, and at 40k we managed to pass the 4th place guy to secure a 3rd place overall for me !! The last 2 k really hurt, we were close to 4:00m/km and 3:30 for the last bit.
