Mount Yamnuska with the kids !
Before Mount Yamnuska closes for the season I decided to take the kids up to the top ! Well, almost to the top.... We went pass the Chimney which is quite a challenge.. Maria came with us and was terrified!
We had a really nice weather for the challenge and without hesitation they were all very keen on going. One thing I have to mention is that, from all the things we do as a family, I think that hiking is one of those things that the kids don't put a fight with.. ever... like, as soon as we start talking about the plans, the mountain we are going, or trail, they all are like ok let's go. I am super happy and proud that they love the nature as much as I do, they love each challenge. This year hiking season hasn't even started and we have already done 7 hikes (Trolls Fall, Suspension Bridge, Taylor Lake, White Buddha, Yamnuska, Drumheller, Fairview Lookout) !!
Anyway, Saturday we all slept in, had a nice breakfast as left to Yam at around 10am. We started at 11 with very nice weather, sweater came off in the first 10 minutes. Looking at Yam from the bottom you actually see where you are going, the trail starts flat for a bit, and then is all up for about 3k. The last 400mts were covered in snow, very steep and soft. Maria had to put on spikes on her hiking shoes, kids were fine without.
Once at the Chimney, Maria was very firm about not going through. I told her I would take a peak with Nic and see how was it. I went up and Nic and I had no major problems, with the view of the alpine on the other side of the Chimney I knew I had to convince Maria. We went back and convinced them, left the backpacks and poles and one by one went through the slippery Chimney, if it wasn't for the snow, it would have been really easy/ Once we passed through it the view of the alpine was breath talking ! they were happy to do it but, didn't want to keep climbing to the top.. I thought they have already done enough and we started our descent.
Coming down was fun and fast, all with plenty of energy left decided to run/walk. We stopped for lunch in a grassy spot (never do that again in Yamnuska, because 2 days later we found a Tick in Lucas' head !! lesson learnt :-).
