The Rockwall trail run, Kootenay BC
| Floe Lake, BC |
If you want to put your legs to the test, then you should run this multi-day trail in one go... and then hope you can still walk next day !
Stefan texted me a few days before to suggest a trail run for the weekend, of course I said yes without asking too many details about the adventure.
55kms with 2,800mts of elevation !! bang that's all.
We met at 6:30 in the Painting Pots trail head (that means leaving Calgary at 4:30 am). Nicki shuttle us to the South part of the trail (Floe Lake) and we took off from there.
The crew was Stefan, his friend Dave, Daisy and me. The weather was good and overcasted to keep us cool. I haven't done this trail before, but usually people hike this over 3-5 days point to point.
The first 10k will take you to this magical, beautiful, gorgeous lake "Floe Lake" wow, what a view, in fact as soon as I saw it I told myself "I have to camp here with Nicholas". After a quick stop waiting for Daisy we continued on the climb to Numa Pass. That was the first big climb of the day out of three climbs. The other two were Tumbling Pass and Rockwall Pass. We had a quick lunch at Tumbling Pass admiring the beauty of the glacier and carried on.. As we were going through Rockwall Pass a storm came in and with heavy rain, hail and thunders we kept going at a good pace to stay warm, it was getting cold and we were soak ! Challenging run down with all the rocks wet and slippery ! Dave and I were ahead for about 10 minutes when we decided to split and kept goin, Stef was back with Daisy so at least they were together and no one was by alone.
The last 15kms were supposed to be down and flat, however the small climbs in between sure messes up your cadence.... I thought I was going to be able to run, but it became run, walk, run, walk.... painful last 10k !! We got to Painting Pots and couldn't even take a picture of its magical colors... I was done ! Got to the car and after a beer and seating down waiting for the Stef my legs were cramping badly.. oh well it was a nice and totally worth day in the mountains !!
Total time was 10:04, and moving time was 8:53. 55kms with 2,800 mts
