Asulkan Hut, Sep 2023
We planned this year to explore a few huts from the ACC.. When I booked the Asulkan Hut early in May 2023 I knew it was going to be a gamble with the weather.. With the temperatures going down in the last few weeks, I changed a few things and decided to pack more winter gear just in case !!
We left Friday right after work, stayed in Golden (at a hotel) to have a good rest and nice start. At Ramada’s hotel we had hot breakfast and some pool time in the morning.
We drove to Rogers Pass at 10am, got to the trail head at around 11am and began the hike !! Maria was nervous about bear encounters, but we carried bear spray as usual.
The hike to the hut is about 8kms from the campground/parking lot, stays flat most of the time and gains almost 1,000mts in the last 2kms ! man that is what I call a hike !! most of the hike is in the ridge, with the Asulkan Glacier on your side all the time the views are amazing, although the hike up was snowy and over casted… We made it to the hut at around 3, took us 3:48 total time. There were 4 people staying in the hut, but we made it work without any problems.
As soon as we got in we had lunch, brought in ground beef and pasta that was easy to cook and re heat.
After a nice and warm lunch we stay inside the hut and play cards, etc.. Nic and I went out a few time to filter water and explore around the hut, beautiful area, but very foggy afternoon.
After dinner and more card playing, we decided to call it the day and went to sleep.
Maria and I of course had to pee at night ! we went out at midnight, with a full moon we didn’t even need a head lamp !
Next day we woke up with a beautiful blue ski, not even a cloud !! gorgeous view of the mountains, valley, and glaciers.
After having a delicious breakfast and the kids making fun of a “Karen” that was part of the group of 4 we decided to start our hike down.. With all the snow from the previous day and the icy it was a bit sketchy :--) carefully hiking down, but after the first 900mts it was much better and less icy.
We made a few stops along the way to eat and drink and made it to the car in less than 4 hours. Drove back straight to Calgary (with a detour via Radium due to construction), back got home just around 9pm to put the kids to bed…
Until next adventure !!!
